Bulldog Defies Detractors at Ugly Dog Contest
A two-year-old English bulldog named Chato claimed second place in the "cutest" category at the 10th annual Ugly Dog Contest in Del Mar, Calif. last weekend. (Here's a picture of Chato).
According to NCTimes.com Chato's owner, Albert Sanchez, hedged his bets by entering Chato into four categories: "cutest dog," "ugliest dog," "most unusual markings" and "most handsome."
As you'd expect, Chato was flatly rejected from the ugliest dog category. In fact, his entrance into said category is a bit of an outrage considering the inherent handsomeness/gorgeousness of bulldogs. Chato's second-place finish in the "cutest" category also defies explanation, especially since the top award went to a Mexican Hairless named La Rosita. La Rosita? C'mon now.
The "ugliest dog" award was given to Smeegle. NCTimes.com doesn't offer any identifying information about Smeegle -- no breed, no age, nothing -- but we can assume that Smeegle is neither a bulldog nor a pug. He/she/it is probably a poodle. -- Mac
