American Kennel Club Ranks the Pug's Pupularity
It's here. The American Kennel Club's (AKC) rankings of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. The AKC bases its rankings on the number of dogs that are registered in a given year and the 2005 results are in. And for pug lovers, they are shocking.
Pugs are not in the top ten. Obviously, the ranking has nothing to do with cuteness, spunkiness, sassiness, or smooshedness. Pugs rank 12th in the nation (behind poodles -- What?!). Some cities appear to be on the right track -- sort of. Here's how the fabulous pug ranks in popularity in several major cities.
| City | Dog | Popularity Rank |
| Baltimore | Pugs | #6 |
| Boston | Pugs | #6 |
| Chicago | Pugs | #5 |
| Cleveland | Pugs | #6 |
| Los Angeles | Pugs | #8 |
| New York | Pugs | #10 |
| San Diego | Pugs | #6 |
| San Francisco | Pugs | #7 |
| Seattle | Pugs | #3 |
| St. Louis | Pugs | #9 |
| Washington DC | Pugs | #5 |
