Pug Wins Westminster Dog of the Year

Torres the pug won the 13th annual Westminster Dog of the Year contest. The contest, which is held behind the Houses of Parliament, recognizes dogs for good deeds and behaviour, rather than appearance. Despite fierce competition from a long-haired dachsund, a black lab, and a border collie, Torres the pug walked away with the victory. Among the reasons for the win, according to owner Tony Baldry, Torres is very useful when visiting the elderly, and, he picks up crumbs. Sounds like a winner to me.

Jake Gyllenhaal's Puggle

Jake Gyllenhaal's puggle is one among many. Puggles are the new favorite choice for a number of celebrities including James Gandolfini, Julianne Moore and Sylvester Stallone. So much for the theory that owners look like their dogs, except for Sylvester Stallone of course.

The Price of Pug Love

Is there any question that the amount of joy a pug brings to your life is priceless? And yet, we have some estimates:

$2,127 in one time costs. These include purchase, spaying or neutering, and emergency vet care.

$2,489 in annual expenses including food, vet, and toys.

And don't forget the costs associated with, say, getting pee cleaned out of the stereo speaker, removing the unidentifiable guck off the sofa, and replacing the furniture that was ruined when your pet tried to improve the safety of the corners by chewing them off. All of these are purely hypothetical, of course.

Puggle: Delight or Disaster

The latest fad to hit the dog world: a mutt. That's just what the puggle , a cross between a pug and a beagle, is. Don't misunderstand; puggles are adorable. And many people think they offer the best of both worlds. The beauty of a beagle without all the bark and the cuteness of a pug without the breathing issues (although to many pug lovers the snorting is part of the charm). But not everyone agrees that the high priced puggle, which can sell for $600 to $1000, is worth the hefty price tag. The AKC argues that with mixed breeds you never know what you're going to get. Plus, there are many mixed breeds in shelters who are awaiting adoption. Bottom line: There is nothing wrong with wanting a puggle -you may just want to check your local rescue first.

Pugs Love Frozen Custard

Ritter's Frozen Custard, in Cincinatti, serves up free frozen custard to its canine customers - complete with dog buscuit on top. One of their biggest fans is Philbert, a 30 pound pug. Philbert's method: stick his head in the custard and then rotate his body around the bowl. Too bad there's no video.

Pug Labor

Labor Day and Katrina relief combined during the Pittsburg Labor Day parade. The best part: the portly pug with its tongue hanging out. Now that's something to celebrate.

300 Pugs Take Over Hotel

The Omni San Antonio Hotel played host to the annual Pug Dog Club of America national specialty show. The event, which drew pugs and their owners from all over the country featured conformation, obedience, and agility competitions.

All About My Dog, the brainchild of Japanese directors Isshin Inudo and Yoshio Kuroda, examines every aspect of a dog's life. Of particular interest: the adventures of Coco the pug. The adorable (of course) Coco is being used as a chick magnet for his human companion when he is struck down by love. Hilarity ensues; it's a pug in love after all

Tons of Pugs Attend Pugfest Fundraiser

Cincinatti was the sight of the seventh annual Pugfest to raise money for the Ohio Pug rescue. The event drew an assortment of pugs and their owner's, including a couple who drove 10 hours to attend the event. Pugs came dressed in a number of lovely outfits- bumblebee pug, pumpkin pug, and cowboy pug were all in attendance. Cafe Named After English Bulldog

What better namesake for anything, really, than an english bulldog? Scott Macmillian knows the answer is: there is none. Thus, the naming of his cafe, "Scott's Bulldog Cafe" after his bulldog Winston. Of course, Winston the Bulldog's Cafe may have been an even better choice, but we didn't hear it from Winston.
